ABOUT DONETSK
In the summer of 1869, the construction of the Metallurgical plant was started and that gave the birth of the city of Donetsk. What started first as a small mining community, quickly grew into a town in May of 1917, when its population reached 70 000. In July of 1932 the city Stalino (it became Donetsk only in the year of 1961) became the center of Donetsk region. By 1941 the city had 223 big industrial enterprises and 54 small industrial businesses.
Nowadays Donetsk has about 2000 industrial enterprises and 800 of them are the largest in Ukraine. The region produces all the mining equipment for Ukraine, all the rail-way tanker-cars, 55% of coal oar, 98 per cent of all the Ukraine refrigerators, 90 per cent of salt. Also 50 per cent of all the metallurgical production, that is produced here, is exported to more than 50 countries.
The climate in Donetsk is moderate-continental. The population of the city is 1 million people. The city of Donetsk covers 385 square km, it is 28 km long (north to south) and 55 km wide (west to east).
Donetsk has 5 rivers carrying their waters through the city and even one sea of their own (Donetsk Sea - 206 hectare).
Donetsk is one of the largest cultural centers of Ukraine. It has three city theaters, Philarmony, Circus, Planetarium, 140 museums, 12 movie theaters. Donetsk also has 254 monuments. Donetsk is known as a host of many international festivals, such as "The stars of the World's ballet", "The Festival of young pianists", "The Festival of the Smith art", the Dancing tournament and many others.
